January 16th, 2007 9:50 a.m. - She's a fighter

I just wanted to let all of you know that Lauren's condition continues to improve. In fact, she is recovering quite well. We can't thank all of you enough for your heartfelt concern, prayers and thoughts. Clearly, Lauren could feel all the love.

Her heart rate this morning was in the 130's, lower than it has been since she was born. (Compared to 230's bpm a day or so ago.) This is a great sign of her overall health, as preemies exhibit signs of stress, infection, etc...through their heart rates. Her vitals remain strong, and she is receiving much less support than she was even 24 hours ago. So, we believe that she has the infection on the run. (Our medical team believes the infection was probably pneumonia, due to her cloudy lungs, but we don't have any positive test results to confirm that.) They continue to ween her off the vent, and hope to put her back on bubble Cpap breathing soon (which means she will be breathing on her own, essentially). Kaia says she looks comfortable, despite her bruised and swollen arms and legs from all of the IVs and her scars from her multiple procedures, spinal taps, and surgery.

We still don't know the cause of her serious deterioration, and the docs are still searching for it. We hope and pray it won't return. I suppose this is part of the NICU roller coaster that we have heard so much about. We still have many many hurdles to overcome, but things are moving in the right direction. We certainly believe that all of your positive energy, prayers, and concern gave her the strength to push on...She is a seriously tough little girl.

Keep the faith, and much love to you all....

Grant and Kaia

This is SUCH INCREDIBLY WONDERFUL news!!! I am so relieved to hear that Lauren is recovering from the infection. 130 bpm is great!

She has been through so much already, and I am sure it will take time for her little body to heal. She is just such a lucky little girl to have the strength, love and energy of her parents and big brother and the love of so many family and friends.

Thank you, thank you for keeping us posted. I think we were all holding our breathe!

With much love,

Lisa

After being with all of you for the past three days, I am finding it difficult to think of anything else but little Lauren now that I am back in FC. It helps to know that she seems more comfortable today and that she weathered all the tests yesterday. Kaia's soothing and loving voice talking to her baby girl probably helped tremendously. On Monday I watched as Lauren clasped tightly to Kaia's little finger. I keep that image in my mind and heart.
Love,
GranD

Away from a computer this morning, I kept in touch with Lisa and heard the good news over the phone! We both cried tears of relief as she read it out loud. O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! My mom and dad send their love and joy for today's good news as well. (They are about to get on a plane and were holding their breath with the rest of us.) Go little sweet Lauren, go! :) Keeping you close in my heart, as always.

P.S. I love the image Dede described of your little girl holding tightly to her mommy's finger. Really beautiful.

All the research shows that girl babies have greater survivability rates than boy babies. Looks like your little Lauren is confirming the research. We are so thrilled that she is improving and hope that the next verb we hear is "thrive." We think about you and your family everyday, wishing the best for all of you and for your little fighter Lauren.

Warmly,

Judith and Stuart

Wow. I just read the entire blog from the beginning... I have to say that I needed some kleenex afterwards, but we are SO glad that she is doing better and continually making progress. I am 24 weeks as of yesterday, and as you can imagine- this hits really close to home.
I KNOW that she is going to keep getting stronger and that you'll finally be able to take home a healthy little girl. I just know it. We're looking forward to all the future play dates to come and for our two little girls to one day meet!
You are in our daily thoughts and prayers.

Keep it up Lauren!

Your future neighbors,
Ben and Lindsay Gehde

Hey guys, Just wanted to let you know that Jamie and I continue to monitor Lauren's progress. You have definetly had your ups and downs and hopefully you will have no more downs. But just know even if you do have more difficulties Lauren is going to pull through she has already shown she is one tough cookie. Who knows, one of these days she may even give
"Denice" a run for her money. She is surely a lot more loved. Hang in there. Jim and Jamie

Kaia and Grant, I missed a couple days on line and shouldn't have! But I'm so happy that things are again turning around and Lauren seems to be holding on. You were part of our congregational prayers at church Sunday, and I hope that energy enveloped you in some way. We will keep you in our thoughts daily and hope that you get some more nights of good sleep and days with smiles! Be strong!
Love,
Lynanne

Wow, so happy to hear that.
After reading yesterday's blog, I couldn't stop thinking about you guys and can't imagine what you went through.
Just imagine, when she is old enough to read this blog, remembering what a strong fighter she was. I am sure other challenges in life would look easy after that.

Love
Nilou
